After natural disaster aborted 2NE1’s promotions in Japan it was decided that they would return to Korea with a new single. The result is Lonely, their first digital single. The song is a simple ballad that sounds almost like a true MTV Unplugged kind of production with minimal instrumentation driven by an acoustic guitar, strings and a gentle bass line and nothing else.
This setting allows the voices of 2NE1 to really shine. There’s no auto-tune (something that YG Entertainment has been pretty adamant about) or rap verses to be found here. It’s nice to listen a chilled out song like this where you can actually hear each member of the group sing. Much of the vocal heavy lifting falls upon Park Bom but everyone else holds their own equally so no complaints at all there.
I have to say that this is a surprising change in direction for 2NE1 but a great one. Lonely shows a softer side of the group that many probably were not expecting to see.
