ABCHO is a unit comprised of popular ex-Hello! Project members Ishikawa Rika and Yoshizawa Hitomi. This unit’s debut single Me wo Tojite Gyusshiyo is the opening theme song for the Sengoku Collection anime.
Once you listen to this single perhaps you may end up scratching your head and the burning question you may have is, “Isn’t this just Hangry & Angry without the whole space cat theme?” Pretty much. There isn’t much to differentiate this from the pairs previous personas musically.
But hey, it’s not like anyone is really going to care about that small detail right? It’s IshiYoshi doing what they do best, and that’s rocking out. If you can live with that then you’re in for some good stuff.
The a-side had an intro that sounded like a Girugamesh song and I was kind of disappointed when the actual song didn’t go full on visual kei angry rock. Oh well, the song is still worth listening to.
It’s reminiscent of Kiss Me Kill Me era Hangry & Angry if you need a reference point. The downside to this track may be the stuttering effects on the guitars and vocals. While that might turn a few people off the effects are tastefully done and are not used as a crutch to carry the song.
The b-sides consist of the original version of Kuusou Discotheque and remixes of the two songs on this single & their instrumentals. Kuusou Discotheque is probably not as captivating as Me wo Tojite Gyusshiyo but it has its charms.
I’m reminded of something similar to Version 2.0 Garbage type songs when I hear it which makes it completely passable for me. I’m not sure about some of you younger readers. That reference might go way over your heads so maybe you should look it up because Garbage is a great band.
I don’t have much to say about the remixes. They aren’t anything to really write home about in my opinion and perhaps there’s some appeal to someone. Just not me. They’re nice… And that’s about all I can think of saying.
Even though this may be Hangry & Angry lite it’s still another strong outing from Ishikawa & Yoshizawa that’s worth picking up.
