Ai no Dangan is Berryz Koubou’s 26th single. It has a strong Rock influence which makes the song different from the dance fueled Heroine ni Narou ka and Shining Power.
The video for this song was a visual buffet of sometimes unintentional funny so one has to wonder how the actual song fares without that barrier. Taken at face value it manages to stand on its own without any difficulty. Compared to the other Hello! Project summer songs I would have to say this is the most aggressive sounding of the release batch so far.
Whether that’s a good thing is subjective as some may not have accustomed themselves to the sound shift as quickly as others. (Long time Hello! Project fans have adapted fairly quickly to this situation) But if you give it some time you’ll notice that it’s a great song.
I don’t think that this will be in everyone’s playlist right away as it does lack some of the instant catchy appeal of some of their recent singles that may scare off the impatient listener.
The b-side Omoide sounds more like the recent Morning Musume single Only You without the odd arrangement and tempo changes or perhaps it’s a bit closer to Maji Desu ka Ska’s b-side. (Motto Aishite Hoshii no)
It is more typical of recent Hello! Project fare but the good thing is that the equal opportunity line distribution Berryz has going continues here as well.
In the end I feel this is a solid package worth taking a listen to and watching. Yes, the plethora of various versions of the video are worth it. After all, Miya in tight red leather should not be wasted. =)
