When the promotional shots for Berryz Koubou’s Be Genki (Naseba Naru!) were released there was the potential for greatness. After all, the members were shown wearing super hero outfits and the covers showed dramatic, comic book type poses. Unfortunately the actual video fails to deliver.
Much like Morning Musume’s Pyoko Pyoko Ultra what could have been silly awesomeness ended up being the status quo. Let me explain what my possible storyboard for this video would be. I was thinking something along the lines of classic Saturday morning television fare like the Power Rangers or costumed Japanese action series like Ultra Man or Kamen Rider. Hell, why not rip off the live action Sailor Moon?
Don’t you think that maybe this video would have been epic with Berryz fighting all manners of evil bad guys? It doesn’t even have to be a quality batch of bad guys. At this point even these guys will do:
But nope. We get dance shot, close-up, wash rinse & repeat. Granted that members like Miyabi, Yurina & Risako looked pretty damn good. Although Socko’s hairstyle was kind of a little too much. The shot of them dancing in Odaiba was also pretty cool mainly for the fact that its an actual location shot instead of a studio one.
Lastly the thing where they grab on to each other’s capes and run around in a circle was cute, but in the end there was not enough to call this amazing, superb, or a masterpiece or whatever positive spin you can put on this.
I’m not saying this was absolutely horrible since I do like Berryz and they could have done much much worse. (*COUGH*chicken suits*COUGH) It’s probably that the concept was a bit misleading maybe leading to some unrealistic expectations.
