Review

Berryz Koubou’s 30th single takes them away from covering songs from other countries and firmly entrenches them into the current Hello! Project sound. Unlike Morning Musume’s recent song Help Me!! which follows the “more is more” approach, WANT! is simpler and more along the lines of a straightforward dance track.

That may sound less than exciting, especially if you are a fan of unnecessary tempo changes and nonsensical transitions between sections of songs. (Hello again Momusu & special shout out to Shoujo Jidai) But for those who like the “less is more” philosophy WANT! will be perfect for your listening needs.

The song plays to Berryz’ strengths as a unit and while the line distribution is pretty much the same as always, it doesn’t necessarily take away from the overall impact of the track. In a way this is kind of like a less frantic version of Dakishimete Dakishimete.

The b-side Yuuki wo Kudasai unfortunately is about as close to weak sauce as you can get for Berryz in this new modernized H!P era. It suffers from the generic formula that UFP producers can do in their sleep and is pretty forgettable compared to WANT!

If you like the current trend in H!P a-sides you should have absolutely no problem with WANT! If those kind of songs make your ears hurt then bypass and go straight for the status-quo of the past that is the b-side instead.
