Review

Beverly is AVEX’s newest solo female artist. Awesome is her debut full-length studio album, and it features the songs I Need Your Love (used in the Fuji TV drama Crisis), Just Once More (the theme song for the drama Kiss x kiss x Kiss), and Tell Me Baby.

It has been a while since AVEX has pushed a new solo female singer out of their camp who is not named Dream Ami. With the likes of Namie Amuro, Kumi Koda and Ayumi Hamasaki starting to get a little long in the tooth, it looks like they are pulling the trigger on getting another of their next-generation female solo artists out into the market.

With vocal ability being her strongest selling point (she can reach up to A5), the music Beverly is given is very well crafted to emphasize that fact. Much of the material on Awesome falls within the Pop and R&B genres, making her similar to early May J or Ariana Grande. The tracks that are closer to the latter genre are the ones that tend to leave a longer-lasting impression.

Too Much, I Need Your Love, Unchain My Heart, and Empty are examples of such songs and are the ones you should pay the most attention to. Other songs also worth checking out are Dancing In The Rain and Ima mo Anata ga.

In the end, Awesome can be considered an enjoyable listen and a mostly solid debut album with a few small hiccups. If you like the big-voice pop diva types of artists, then this album will be something that may be of interest to you.
