Review

Big Bang follow up their 2011 self-titled release with Alive. Much like their previous release it is a mini-album and they are promoting multiple songs at the same time. The song song on Alive are little less boombastic and clubby. The Electro-Pop influence is still present but it’s much more subdued than previous efforts for the most part. One could say that there is bit of a smoother groove in the first four tracks.

Bad Boy obviously stands out among the pack. It’s kind of strange to hear T.O.P. sing or half sing his verses but dude doesn’t have that bad of a singing voice I guess. Perhaps I’m more accustomed to hearing him rap.

Things pick up near the end with the final 3 songs which are typical of what one would hear out of modern K-Pop. The best among that batch is Fantastic Baby. While probably paint by numbers for this group it’s still some catchy stuff. The “Boom Shakalaka” line does get stuck in your head after a few repeated listens.

In the grand scheme of Big Bang’s career Alive isn’t groundbreaking or very innovative. To be blunt, it’s business as usual. But as the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
