I don’t exactly have a lot of love for the Black Eyed Peas since Fergie joined the group. Their shift from Hip-Hop to Hip-Pop was kind of jarring. I’ll admit that I liked some of the songs from their Elephunk and Monkey Business albums but even then I wasn’t exactly overjoyed. When they made a change to their sound on 2009’s The E.N.D. with more dance club oriented songs I considered giving them another go.
Their sixth album The Beginning continues what the E.N.D. started and is loaded with the catchy songs such as Light Up The Night, XOXOXO, and Fashion Beats. (The first and last songs contain some familiar samples for those of you who like your crate digging.) If you’re looking for ballads or mid-tempo songs you’re out of luck. The closest thing to a non-party track is Just Can’t Get Enough. Otherwise, The Peas are in full party mode.
Whether you will enjoy this album will depend on how you feel about the current Electro pop sound that has dominated will.i.am’s recent production work. If you can’t stand what he’s done for the past while and long for the days of the Hip-Hop Peas then give this a pass.
If you are the opposite then I recommend taking a listen to The Beginning. Yes, it can be a bit repetitive and some of the lyrics are outright lame but once you get past that it’s not bad.
