BoA’s 30th Japanese single was released in the summer of 2010 and has a distinct retro sound to it. For those old enough to remember it’s very similar to Control era Janet Jackson dance tracks. (If you’re a youngin, Google that or ask your parents, older sibings, cousins or uncles/aunts)
That actually works in favor of BoA as it gives her some different material to work with outside of the typical J-Pop that AVEX usually sends her way. Woo Weekend definitely wears its late 80’s influence on its sleeve and would not sound out of place with songs from that era. The bass solo is especially sweet on this track.
No Dance, No Life is the b-side and is the better of the two songs on this package. Personally I think it sounds a lot like Janet Jackson’s Pleasure Principle. Again, another song that strongly displays its influences throughout. It has a bit more an edge compared to the pop of the a-side which should appeal to those who like a bit of sandpaper in their tracks.
Given her mass catalog of Japanese singles this isn’t exactly the cream of the crop, but it was a nice detour into retro land.
