Cee-Lo Green should be a name familiar to those who have followed southern Hip-Hop and R&B. He was an original member of Goodie Mob until he left to pursue a solo career. To most he’s probably more well known for being the vocalist of the group Gnarls Barkley. The Lady Killer is his third solo album and features the mega hit Fuck You.
The sound of this album kind of falls in the retro soul category. Everything has a bit of an old school sound to it that makes the songs stand out from the conventional cookie cutter Hip-Hop/R&B hybrid that many artists rely on these days. Besides the overplayed (yet still very catchy) lead single there are a few other standout tracks such as Bright Lights Bigger City, Bodies, Love Gun, Cry Baby and Fool For You.
My personal favorite is Love Gun with it’s James Bond theme song styling. But you can’t really go wrong with too many songs on this album. I do have to say that it does tend to drag just a little bit near the end but it’s nothing that will make you wonder when it’s going to end or want to immediately hit the stop button.
I would suggest this album to those who prefer their R&B with a bit more substance or to those who are more into neo or retro type soul. Overall, an excellent job done.
