Review

Dream Morning Musume is a mix of various members of generations gone by. Many of them are from the former Elder Club who were kicked to the curb like last night’s Ms. Right Now. Some might even consider them to be the “real” Morning Musume given that the current incarnation is in disarray with so many new members joining at once.

That of course is subjective and it depends on your point of view of the group at this time. Anyway, let’s get back to the “old ladies” of Dream Morning Musume and their first and last single Shining Butterfly.

Yes, you read that right. They’re only releasing one original song and then the members who don’t have projects to work on go back into the wild doing whatever it is that they do in UFA limbo. As an aside, I would like to state that I would totally engage in an all night “Playstation marathon” with Abe Natsumi. Just putting that out there.

Shining Butterfly is reminiscent of the popular “Emo Musume” songs that were staples of the main group from their 38th to 40th single. The difference is that this song is performed by women who are older (not a jab at Nakazawa) and perhaps more experienced with the wicked ways and world of love

Does that make the song more convincing? I think so. Does it make it any better than recent UFA/H!P material? Not really. Let’s be honest here and say that Shining Butterfly has the potential to be interchangeable with any mid tempo Berryz or C-ute song. I exclude S/Mileage because squeak would cause the song to be a fail & current Morning Musume is self explanatory.

Even with that all said this is still a decent song that may bring back fond memories of days of yore. Speaking of days of yore, the b-side is a throwback to a Hello! Project concert favorite updated for 2012. It doesn’t sound drastically different from the original and to have this group of women take it on is rather nice.

Personally I would have preferred if they did another original song for a b-side but perhaps that’s asking too much. It kind of sucks that there most likely won’t be any new material from Dream Morning Musume after this single. I wouldn’t necessarily count them out yet though. UFA does love to trot these old war horses out after all.

Once a Musume, always a Musume right?
