Review

Fairies second single HERO / Sweet Jewel was released a short 2 months after their debut. This is similar to the template used for their first single. Hey if it worked the first time why not try again?

HERO has a much simpler approach than More Kiss, opting for a sparse swing beat (with a strong emphasis on the hand clap on the down beat) and a more traditional hook. That doesn’t sound like much but it’s rather effective in execution. And part of the chorus is in English so those with a deficiency in Japanese can somewhat sing along.

Sweet Jewel is more along the lines of traditional idol pop. It kind of sounds similar to something that would be given to Mano Erina only without the stigma of having the H!P stank signature all over it. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, I’m just pointing that out for the sake of giving you an easily recognizable reference.

In the end this was a pretty good follow up that shows high potential for this group. I do believe that the simplicity of HERO many not appeal to a lot of people so I would recommend going with Sweet Jewel if you’re looking to rub an idol quickie out of this single.

But really, you can’t go wrong with either track.
