Review

After last year’s successful mini-album is was inevitable that f(x) would release a full length album. It was somewhat delayed by Amber being put on the shelf due to an ankle injury and then disappearing from the spotlight but they’re back and with all members intact. Pinocchio is the group’s first proper album and it comes with high expectations.

And they do not disappoint as Pinocchio is full of catchy tracks with only one mis-step along the way. The best thing about this album is that it’s only 10 tracks long which means that some actual thought was put into what would be here. Normally you would have as many songs as possible to maximize listening potential. In theory that  is supposed to work but in practice it just equals filler that doesn’t even qualify as decent b-side material.

Let’s start with the positives of Pinocchio. The opening track Danger gives a strong indication of how this album is going to sound. In essence a bit of Urban/Pop crossover with a lot of catchy hooks. My Style and Lollipop (not a cover of the 2NE1/Big Bang collaboration) follow that pattern to the letter.

It’s not all like that as the group also shows their softer side with Beautiful Goodbye and So Into U. These songs will probably come as a shock to those who have not heard f(x) sing a ballad before but they are more than capable to keep up with similar groups in that department.

Of course there is the mis-step that I mentioned with Gangsta Boy. It’s kind of too sugary sweet for my tastes and doesn’t really do much other than annoy me a bit. If it were a little closer to what Sweet Witches accomplished I would give it a pass but as it stands, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

With this album I believe that f(x) has solidified themselves as a force to be reckoned with. It’s not like that they weren’t already but this only adds fuel to their steamroller that is running over other similar groups.
