Introduction:

Houkago Princess, also known as HouPri or HoriPri for those who prefer shortened names, are a new Jpop based Idol Group who have received mixed reviews within the Wotaverse, either by the concept the group has or because they aren’t as energetic or stand out as much as other Idol groups do.

Houkago Princess is currently made up of seven members, aged between 21 to 15, and are based around the idea that they are an ‘Idol you can dress up’, where their fans get to decide the outfits that they wear for their single covers or concerts. Currently, Houkago Princess are under no label, however the people behind the group are apparently a talented team who design their costumes, give them vocal and dance training and overall sell the product as well as manage the girls as best as they can.

Currently, Houkago Princess are being promoted as much as possible by going to small events held in Japan. The group is still fairly unknown, however have gained a few fans despite their poorly promoted start as an indies Idol group.

Review:

Houkago Princess ~Oshiete Kudasai~ is a single that I personally like. I latched onto the group quite quickly, despite the rocky start, and have found that I like the single, though there could be a bit of improvement for the title song, as well as finding that the girls have somehow made me like them even more as a group. I guess it’s something about them still being a raw, fresh-faced group that makes me want them to do well and become better known right now.

Houkago Princess ~Oshiete Kudasai~ is the A-side of this single, and the only one with a PV to accompany it. Whilst the song itself is quite nice to listen to, this song is the weakest link in the single. Though a rather elegant and sweet sounding song, the vocals lack, there is little energy and the instrumental itself is rather lacking and boring in a few aspects. Personally, I really like the song and find it addicting, though you may have to listen to it a few times in order to get it stuck into your head. For some, it may be a rather generic Idol song from the group, and it could get boring quickly, but it depends on the person listening to it.

Sukidayo (Egao) is the second song from Houkago Princess’ first single, and a cuter, more playful track that the first track. There is a lot more group effort put into this song, and the vocals sound a bit better than what they did in Houkago Princess ~Oshiete Kudasai~. The song itself is soft, and not as energetic as what I would have liked it to be, but it is a very sweet song with a ballad-like feel that might interest some people, and it has some beautiful group parts in it that I personally like a lot. This song is a bit better than what the first song is, however the lack of energy from the group is kind of off-putting. None the less, this song is pretty good and something nice to listen to.

Ichigo Ichie is probably the saviour of this single. It’s a lot more up-beat and happy than the first two songs, and delivers quite well when you listen to it. This is a more energetic song when you compare it to the other two songs, however there is still a lot that lacks when you listen to it yourself. The girls, though they sound nice together and rather happy, still have no energy and don’t show their full potential as singers. That said, I find that this track is my favourite out of all the songs and the one that I would want to listen to most because of the happier beat and the nice group parts you can get from it.

I find that, for an indies single, a lot of people would find themselves disappointed with this group because of the little amount of energy that is represented when you listen to the songs. The vocals seem weak and undeveloped, whilst the girls themselves seem to lack energy and projection when they sing these songs. However, this could also be a charm point to the group as well: It shows the rawness and the freshness of these girls as they try to make their way onto the Idol scene, and some people really like that. For me, I find the group quite charming and sweet because of how new and undeveloped they are as idols right now, but of course not everyone likes that, so it is up to personal choice.

Hopefully, the next single from Houkago Princess will be a lot more energetic, and show more of the girls strengths as well as their charming personalities, because Houkago Princess ~Oshiete Kudasai~ lacked that.
