ONE is the debut (mini) album from Maki Goto. While some may consider the Sweet Black album as her debut, that was more like a side project featuring Maki as a vocalist. This is more like her proper Avex debut.
Based on what she has done on the Avex label so far it was expected that maybe that the songs on this album would be fairly close to what she did with the Sweet Black project. But that isn’t the case here. On ONE she’s takes a few bits of the Ravex style and then goes all R&B near the end.
With this being a mini-album it’s front loaded with the 2 single releases and then everything else afterwards. Of those 2 singles I like Eyes the most. That has to be one of the funkiest dance tracks I’ve heard from a J-Pop artist in a long time.
It has a really nice kind poppy House kind of vibe. This track is prime material for a few remixes. I wonder if there are any decent ones floating around out there in cyberspace? The album cuts are quality as well. There really isn’t a bad one in the bunch and they each showcase how versatile an artist Goto has become. She sounds good over anything Avex throws at her.
The only gripe I have with this mini-album is that it’s a mini-album. Perhaps Avex is testing the waters a little more to see how Goto’s fans react before giving her a proper full length release. I say just go ahead and give her one stat.
