Morning Musume previewed part of their 50th single at the The GirlsAward 2012 SPRING/SUMMER on May 26th. Even though its kind of early to really be heaping on praise or deterring people away there was enough to at least have a general idea of what direction the group is heading in for this milestone single.
It took me a long time absorb this. At first I wasn’t sure what to think since my opinion of Hello! Project’s flagship group is not exactly the most popular among the overseas fan base. I have read and heard many opinions ranging from the standard fanboy/girl response of “amazing” and its associated praise to the rather surprising “utter shit” that is only reserved for assholes like me who don’t suck down the Kool-Aid on a daily basis.
To be honest it’s difficult to really form an opinion given that the source material isn’t necessarily the greatest so I’m not going to throw out any compliments or real insults. From what I have heard in this video the song sounds similar to generic D or C level rookie K-Pop from South Korea. Take that as you will, but it’s probably the most progressive thing that Morning Musume has done in a very long time.
Sure the auto tune and stuttering effects are all present but it actually helps the song instead of being an annoying hinderance. It should not be a surprise that Reina & Riho get the lions share of the lines but at least Sayumi gets thrown a few bones as well. We should probably expect things to be that way vocally unless one of the noobs from the 9th or 10th gen suddenly become vocal gods like Abe Natsumi or Takahashi Ai overnight.
One Two Three sounds like a step forward and I will reserve further judgement until the music video or some other higher quality version is released.
