Morning Musume’s latest video is a departure from the low budget silliness that was a showcase for the 9th gen to attempt to woo the fans with their charms. With Only You we get what appears to be a return to a slightly more mature Musume from videos such as Nanchatte Renai.
The outfits for this video are much more reserved than those for Maji Desu ka Ska & I guess they present a simple elegance when compared to leather jackets & fishnet stockings.
Sayu in particular looks pretty damn good. I am also thankful for no more Gaki helmet hair. It’s nice to see her growing it back to a longer, much more flattering length. Lastly Fukumura is very nice to look at.
The sets were not as bad as I had expected them to be. While they are as equally uninspiring as before they are at least an upgrade from giant kana & cacti. So yay for that. I don’t really get the whole deal with the diamond effects but they’re better than the artificial bubbles from C-ute’s Momoiro Sparkling.
Unfortunately that’s all the good I could pull out of this video since it’s another in a long string of zero narrative, status quo videos. And unlike Berryz or C-ute there’s no obvious distraction to cover up that fact.
In fact these are the two members you see the most. Everyone is mostly relegated to background duty. Even Gaki.
That’s not to say that the other members aren’t tossed a few bones. But there’s plenty of love for Takahashi and Tanaka throughout this video. I guess the whole pimp the 9th gen idea went out the window when the 10th gen auditions were announced?
There still seems to be a glimmer of hope as the 9th gen is sort of featured more towards the end of the video.
With Gaki’s hair redeemed there must be one who has theirs all fucked up. And this time it isn’t Mitsui. Nope, that responsibility falls on the shoulders of the leader. The short & blonde look should be banned from H!P’s style catalog.
I like Takahashi with short hair but the color is so wrong. It’s almost on par with Gaki’s helmet hair on the “WTF did you do to your head?” absurdity scale. That of course is my take on her current hair style. I know there are many who love the look.
The choreography for this song isn’t the most challenging that Morning Musume has done. It’s kind of basic for them given some of their past works and when compared to Berryz & C-ute, extremely G rated as well.
As a whole this video is okay. It’s almost a step back but thankfully it dodged the “cost effective” look of Maji Desu ka Ska and that saved it for me. Looks like it’s going to be a Takahashi (tagged team with Tanaka) love fest in Momusu’s videos until she graduates. Soak it in while it lasts.
