Review

Crazy Crazy / Harajuku Iyahoi is the 13th single from Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. It is a double a-side that contains one solo Kyary song and one collaboration song with her producer Nakata Yasutaka and British singer Charli XCX.

Harajuku Iyahoi can be considered the prototypical Kyary Pamyu Pamyu brand of electro pop. That could mean that it’s not going to be that exciting of a song for those who are starting to tire of her formula. For everyone else expect another bright and fun type of song with another odd, nonsensical visual spectacle of a video to accompany it.

The song that garners the most interest is the collaboration with Nakata Yasutaka and Charli XCX. Crazy Crazy is a simpler composition that uses a basic dance music structure as its base. Charli XCX’s vocals may not be immediately recognizable due to the heavy processing but it is her you hear.

The only thing I didn’t like about Crazy Crazy is that Kyary’s presence isn’t exactly felt at all. Charli XCX was definitely the more dominant one on this song even though both vocalists are trading verses.

The video for this sing is not as weird as the Harajuku Iyahoi but it’s still worth checking out. The faces of those involved are superimposed over women in cosplay and bikini’s. In Nakata’s case a business man and sushi chef playing a piano.

Overall this is a fun pair of songs that Nakata/Kyary Pamyu Pamyu fans will enjoy immediately. If you’re one who has not been exposed to either artists previous material then just stick with the collaboration track with Charli XCX as it is the stronger of the two songs on this single.
