Review

Checkmate! is a compilation of Namie Amuro’s collaborations with other artists. While not a complete collection, it does cover a lot of the more popular pairings she has done over the years. This album has been long overdue in my opinion.

There are familiar songs such as her recent appearance on the Ravex album (Rock U), and duets with A.I (Fake) and Double (Black Diamond) along with her loves collaboration with m-flo (Luvotomy). There’s even a bit of her work with Suite Chic (Wet N’ Wild) and JHETT (Do or Die) that round things out.

In addition to the familiar there are 4 new songs to take in featuring a varied group of artists. The most interesting of the new batch are Blackout (feat. Lil’ Wayne and VERBAL, which also is on the latter’s Visionair album) and Make It Happen featuring South Korean girl group After School.

I normally have a strong dislike of anything Lil’ Wayne but he didn’t suck on Blackout. It’s strange to say but he actually melded with Amuro and VERBAL quite well and didn’t sound out of place like I thought he would. It doesn’t hurt that the beat is pretty damn hot as well. It’s nice to hear a bit of old school style Electro Hip-Hop.

Make It Happen on the other hand is similar to more recent Amuro songs. It’s quite catchy although there really wasn’t too much After School to be heard outside of the first couple of verses, the video more than makes up for their lack of vocal presence with a lot of nice eye candy that prominently features the group.

Overall this is a solid collection of Amuro’s collaboration work. As I stated in the intro, it’s not complete and I’m sure her fans can think of many songs that should have been on here instead of others. But don’t let that stop you from picking this up.
