Review

Negipecia sounds like a cure for male pattern baldness but it is actually the name for a collaboration between two Japanese idol groups Negicco and Especia. The a and b-sides are produced by Tsugutoshi Goto, who is known for his work with Onyanko Club and various AKB48 stage songs.

Released in a limited time frame during the summer of 2014, the a-side lives up to the season and does give off a summery vibe. Given that neither groups normal producers are involved in the main tracks Girl’s Life might be a shock to the system or will illicit a “meh” response.

For what it’s worth I think the song is rather catchy and grows on you after a few repeated spins. Still, it does lack that certain something that keeps it from sticking ones head afterwards. Think of the a-side as pleasant background music.

If you want something with a more individual touch then it’s best to turn to the b-side Mizugi, Yukata, Hanabi, Senobi. There is a version that is catered to sound of the groups that make up this collaboration. Which one you decide to go for will depend on whether you follow both Negicco and Especia or one exclusively.

Both are unique takes on the same song so grab the 12-inch edition of this single since you get both in the same package. Otherwise shell out the cash for the Especia and Negicco versions to get the complete set of songs that include some bonus remixes as coupling tracks. These make up for what can be considered a weak a-side and are worth making the investment in the multiple editions of this single.
