Review

PSY. The man who infiltrated the worldwide mainstream consciousness with the infectious Gangnam Style and its even more addictive video.  How exactly can one follow up a mega hit?  To be honest it’s impossible to do it.  Lightning can’t strike twice can it?

Well after looping this song many times over my verdict is simply that if you are looking for Gangnam Style 2 you best be looking elsewhere because this sure isn’t it.  Gentleman is a different beast than its predecessor.  First off, the groove is not as intense and opts for much more subdued approach.  This song will still rock a party but you’re probably not going to be getting an intense cardio workout doing horsey dances.

The tempo of this song is however perfect for rhythmic hip thrusting, so if that’s your only competent dance move this one’s for you.  Once this gets a few DJ friendly remixes I can see this making it into many mainstream club sets.  In its current form it could work in a set that builds up to the peak time goodness.

In other forms? Who knows, but there are a lot of possibilities for adventurous producers willing to take the song into strange and wondrous territory.

Now that we have the feel of Gentleman established, what exactly is he saying in this song?  Is PSY still ripping on the whole Gangnam lifestyle?  Well thanks to the kind folks at policymic, there are translated lyrics for everyone who can’t speak Korean.

I don’t know if you know why it needs to be hot

Mother father gentleman

Does any of that make sense to you? Personally I was fine with not knowing any of what PSY was saying. This time around I didn’t really get anything on the level of Gangnam Style commentary and this felt like him being a sleazeball dropping cheesy lines on women in a bar. Yeah, I didn’t really need to know this at all.

I also felt the “mother father gentleman” was a cop out. If the intention was to emphasize the fact that there is gentleman in the house, then why not make a dirty version proclaiming that you are indeed a “MOTHERFUCKING GENTLEMAN!” and leave it at that?

Regardless, now you can all sing along and add the swearing in yourself right? Or does that even matter? We all know that the video is what you want to see.

If you are expecting the insanity of the Gangnam Style video you may be disappointed. Gentleman is a completely different entity and it should be treated as such. If you do that you’ll be pleased at watching PSY being a complete douche bag and somehow still managing to score Ga-In. (from the Brown Eyed Girls)

While this video may not be a complete gong show it does have its moments:

PSY Gentleman 00017

PSY Gentleman 00018

PSY Gentleman 00019

Besides the gags, people also want to know if there’s a new dance to go along with this song. Well kind of. PSY does pull the horsey dance but the arm/hand movements have changed to some sort of flapping motion. Maybe as a gentleman, one should know how to fly?

With the addition of the oh so fine Ga-In there K-Pop fans will notice that the bulk of the choreography is borrowed from the Brown Eyed Girls’ Abracadabra video. (a fact pointed out by Ray at Idolminded during his synopsis of this video)

And I am perfectly fine with that. That might not sit well with others but whatever.

Given that Gentleman had some pretty lofty expectations, does it meet them as an entire package? Nope. Not even close. Musically the song isn’t as catchy and the video is rather blah in comparison. But as I said at the beginning of this piece it’s an impossible task to even try to match what Gangnam Style did.

Will this still capture the imaginations of the general public? Probably not as much as one would hope. Then again, the good will of Gangnam Style may up the odds of Gentleman hitting #1 in America. Especially now that YouTube hits count in the chart rankings. So even though the song may not be as epic or great it will probably finally give PSY the top spot his previous song was unable to attain. (Unless Maroon 5 has another track to cock block with as well)

Whether that’s considered a tainted victory for the Hallyu is another question entirely.
