That’s My Jam is a weekly feature where one person from the Selective Hearing staff goes to wax poetic about music that is pivotal to their musical tastes. Whether that would be an album, a song, or anything in-between. We all had to start somewhere. This week: Kusumi Koharu’s Chance!

Review:

Koharu Kusumi is the reason I am here today. No, I am not lying, she really is. If I hadn’t found the PV for Chance! by accident whilst roaming youtube for anime music that day, I would not have stumbled across the Idol who started it all for me, and I certainly would not be where I am today, which is here. Talking to you.

I do love Chance! a lot as a song, in fact it is the song that I think of right away when Kusumi Koharu comes to mind, and the song I will happily sing and dance along to like an idiot (actually, that’s all the songs I listen to, but…) but it isn’t my favourite Koharu song, coming a close second to Mizuiro Melody, which is my ultimate favourite, but I digress! Really though, Chance! is a great song and the very track that introduced me to Idols and the happiness they could bring. The addicting sound, bright happy lyrics and that hyperactive, smile-enthused beat really made me adore and appreciate the sound of an Idol singing, even if her vocals were sub-par or barely good, and allowed to delve into a world of enthusiasm and sweetness that I had not experienced before. To me, this track is pure glory and goodness, and it just brings back so many happy memories of finding out about Idols and becoming addicted to these wonderful songs that I still adore today.

The coupling track Ramutara is not one that I have listened to a great deal, in fact I have probably listened to it only a few times on the off-chance. Needless to say, it isn’t one of my favourite songs, though it definitely has that Koharu charm to it that makes me endure and enjoy it. It’s energetic, fun and up-beat and, much like Koharu back in the day, quite weird and quirky in a good way. The beat reminds me a little of Bollywood, much like Koi no Dance Site in that sense; it has that oriental feeling to it that is rather refreshing but still oh-so Koharu. It’s definitely unique and I can’t hate it; it’s too catchy and fun to hate! THta said, it isn’t a patch on Chance! or the rest of Koharu’s discography, but it still does a good job of defining Koharu’s nature at that time, her sound and her personality.

Chance! is so very nostalgic for me, bringing me back to my early days of falling in love with Idols and realising just how beautiful they were, whilst also returning me to a time where I worshipped Anime and fell in love with the character of Tsukushima Kirari. As a single, it is fun and full of character, showing off how good Koharu was as a personality and performer. I love the music and how different the two tracks sound to each other, but above all I love the character that is Koharu. I miss it, and I miss this kind of music too.

… Yeah, we need different composers and lyricists for Hello! Project now…
