Review

Twinkle5 are an idol group based off a two-part 2013 NHK Christmas drama Tenshi to Jump starring Momoiro Clover Z. The plot of the show revolves around a fledgling idol group Twinkle5 who disband after their leader (Rin Asuka) quits the group. A mysterious girl (Kanako Momota) aims to reunite the four remaining members (Shiori Tamai, Ayaka Sasaki, Momoka Ariyasu, and Rena Takagi) before Christmas.

Twinkle 5

Suffice it to say this is shameless self-promotion for Momoiro Clover Z’s music and a showcase for the group’s acting talents. (or lack thereof)  That will not be discussed here, instead we’re going to talk about the single associated with this drama.

As expected, this is typical Momoclo styled J-Pop. Well, maybe not as insane as some of the stuff they were releasing before this but still, it has that certain swagger that the group is known for.  Of the two tracks available on this  single the a-side (Jump) is probably the more interesting listen. It starts off with an acapella vocal before the drum line/bass instrumental kicks in for the verse. The song does go into more conventional idol styled music for the rest of its time but still keeps this kind of weird swing vibe throughout.

The b-side (TwinkleWink) is more typical of Momoiro Clover Z. It does have a catchy hook with the whole “Wink! Wink! Wink! Wink!” deal but it’s not as fun as the a-side unfortunately.

In the end these were okay drama related songs. They’re not going to be considered amongst the best in Momoclo’s catalog but they’re decent enough for a fictional idol group who coincidentally look like a real one.
