Berryz Koubou’s 29th single is also their second cover. Instead of German one hit wonder disco they stick closer to home taking on Thai artist Bird Thongchai and his song Row Mah Sing.

The Berryz version is very faithful to the original. There are the little H!P twists that of course make this cover different from the source but for the most part you’re almost getting a carbon copy. That isn’t really a bad thing since for some reason Berryz do really well with these kinds of songs.

This is the silly fun that fits the personality of the group perfectly. I don’t know what this says about the current state of Hello! Project productions but it’s strange that when they borrow outside the collective their output is actually better than any in-house original material.

The video for this is kind of your standard H!P fare. I do like the costumes and Chinami’s mugging for the camera but otherwise there’s not much that makes it stand out from any other Berryz video treatment.

The first b-side also happens to be another cover of Bird Thongchai, the original is called Too Much So Very Much. For Berryz it’s re-branded to Loving You Too Much. In this case I think the cover outdoes the source material by a wide margin. The H!P sound definitely makes the song better than the mid-tempo, somewhat cheesy pop of the source material.

The one thing I did find odd was to hear Miyabi rapping. Isn’t that normally left for Chinami & Saki? But hey, she didn’t sound too bad so yay for that. It’s always good to get someone you don’t expect to start busting out rhymes.

While the song is great, the video is a travesty. Whoever the makeup person was should be fired. Rosy cheeks are nice, but man the blush is so overdone that all the girls have the same color on their face that Rina Nakanishi has when she’s getting boned. Not good for a non-AV video man.

And what the hell happened to Risako? Who styled her in this video? Why does she look all washed out compared to the other members? For shame stylists, for shame. Why did you take a beautiful young woman and turn her into some pale ghost?

Speaking of what the hell, we get Tsugunaga Momoko’s solo song. Until I heard this I thought that Kusumi Koharu’s Papancake was the most annoying H!P song. Momochi! Yurushite Nyan Taisou makes Papancake sound like an epic symphony of awesome in comparison.

I believe those of you who don’t like Momoko’s ultra cute annoying act are going to hate this song with a passion and it will make you loathe the word “Nyan” for eternity.

I admit that the lyrics are very clever, but they’re given to you in such an annoying package that it hurts. As this song dragged on I was trying to jam a q-tip in my ear until I hit brain to make the noise stop.

In the end this was another great set of covers out of the Hello! Project camp. I warn you to stay far away from the Momoko solo song if you can.
