AKB48 sub unit DiVA disbanded on November 30, 2014. Before their disbandment they released their first and only self-titled album with graduated members Akimoto Sayaka and Masuda Yuka returning for the group’s final releases.

This album contains their previously released singles and features six new songs written by the group members. Given that this is on the avex trax label the overall sound of the songs contained on DiVA is stuck in the realm of 90’s dance pop.

The only downside to that is the inclusion of DISCOVERY and the cover of WOW WAR TONIGHT ~Toki ni Okose yo Movement~. Those are fairly weak songs in any era. Thankfully some of the better b-sides from DiVA’s early singles were included to make up for those deficiencies.

When it comes to slowing things down the few ballads available are quite nice but there is a conspicuous absence of Nakeru Basho. Yes, technically those was not done by DiVA and was instead performed by the single unit DIVA (confused yet?) for the Beginner single; but why not throw it in for fun?

With graduations and transfers to sister groups DiVA feels like a group that was aborted too soon. Sadly circumstances have cut the lifeline of the group short. But at least there is this album to show what could have been.
