It’s been over a year since Hangry & Angry have released any new material. Before this year’s Japan Expo in France it was announced they would be releasing a new single called Reconquista.
The video for the song was recently uploaded to their YouTube channel and it’s a different look for the group this time around. Gone are the darker color palettes that they normally wear and instead we get them dressed in bright white outfits.
It’s definitely a surprise, especially considering that I was recently at the Hangry & Angry fashion show AM2 & many of the models were not wearing anything within the brighter color scheme that this video shows.
Clothes aside, it’s nice to see Ishikawa & Yoshizawa again in their H&A personas. This time they have a song that blends a little bit of 80’s pop with their already well defined Girl Rock sound. The song itself is not as instantly captivating as their previous singles. It strays away from the “in your face” approach and opts for the slow creep into your brain instead.
The theme for this video is marionettes. For some reason it’s rather creepy seeing these two staring blankly at nothing with strings tied to them.
I remember seeing this concept in N’Sync’s Bye Bye Bye and in Hamasaki Ayumi’s Marionette. This is a little bit closer to the latter without the contact lenses to add to the creepy doll state.
This video doesn’t exactly look like a high budget affair and relies heavily on the personality of the performers to get by as something worth watching. And being the H&A (& Rika) fan that I am I don’t mind that. Others who are not exactly enamored with either member of the group may think differently.
As with any Hangry & Angry video there is plenty of Ishiyoshi love going around. Again how that flies will probably depend on how much goodwill either member has developed within your realm of fandom.
There is also plenty of shilling of merchandise in this video. For example, there’s lots of dolls being thrown around and in one instance it looks like my haul at Anime Expo 2009.
This isn’t exactly the best Hangry & Angry video and some may even call it underwhelming since after a year this is the best that can be done? Still, it’s probably enough to satisfy their core fan base.
