Keeping in theme of re-telling classic princess stories, Houkago Princess bring their own take on William Wyler’s 1953 classic, Roman Holiday in their fourth major single release, Himitsu no Tiara to Gelato. With a focus on bringing colour and vibrancy to the mundane world of a runaway Princess, HouPri take on a journey through La Vita as they enjoy their newfound freedom.

With a new generation in tow, Houkago Princesses latest fairy tale release promises a story of Princesses run free in this light spin on a silver screen classic, with their own dose of colour and sweetness thrown in for good measure. Twinkling in sound catchy in delivery, Himitsu no Tiara to Gelato is a fun piece for the dress-up Idol Princesses, though it is certainly a far cry from the powerful tide that was Seishun Mermaid, released back in June. Still, Himitsu no Tiara to Gelato is a fun time all around, showing off Houkago Princesses vibrant nature as they pay homage to Roman Holiday.

The members look energetic and bright, the song is well sung – with the exception of Odagiri Nana, of course – and it has that tell-tale whimsical sound that is oh-so HouPri. If anything, it is whats to be expected, delivering a good dose of whimsical cuteness as it plays.

The accompanying video itself is just as bright and fun, though it does lack a general ‘wow’ factor, especially when it comes to the big reveal of the ‘second’ costume HouPri have started to play up to. With such a spectacular costume change in their live performance, the actual music video’s own reveal does not live up to expectation, falling flat in what it attempts to deliver.

In short; watch the live performance, for both a better change of costume, and for the sake of your ears. Odagiri Nana actually sounds far more tolerable here than she does in the studio recording.

Written with lone 3rd generation member Yamaguchi Miran in mind, the coupling track FORZA! OLE! is an upbeat cheer song dedicated to HouPri’s very own soccer fanatic, with her catchphrase ‘FORZA!’ at the very center of the chorus. Representing energy and a drive to reach ones goal, the song was made with the purpose of being a ‘cheer’ piece that would fire up HouPri’s audience, much like the ‘FORZA’ cry does at soccer matches in A.C. Milan, Italy; the team that Miran herself supports.

Though not as vigorous as anticipated, FORZA! OLE! is an entertaining track with great energy and bounce to it. At its very core, it is a true cheer song that fits in well with HouPri’s discography. It certainly could have done with more fire and power to it, however, its lyrics and overall tune have enough punch to them, but not so much that it feels like a true fan cry during a heated soccer match.

As a single, Himitsu no Tiara to Gelato is decent overall, though its true impact lies in what it can offer live, as opposed to what it delivers as a studio piece. It’s visuals are entertaining and beautifully edited, of course, and its song is whimsical and sweet, but in a concert setting is where it truly soars.
