Japan 2014: Countdown to The 2-Shot Bonanza

It is about a month before the 2014 Japan trip and unlike previous excursions it is every man for him self. The usual suspects from Selective Hearing and New School Kaidan are arriving and departing at different times this year. Some of us are even going to different parts of the country while we are there.

But even though we are all on different schedules there is at least one day where we will unite in the common goal of the 2-shot Bonanza with members of the AKB48, who are holding these events as part of the release of their latest album Tsugi no Ashiato.

A few of the crew will be splitting their time between the May 17 and May 24 events because they’re big ballers and they know how to make it rain.

Me? I’m only going to the May 24 event. My list of 2-shot candidates was listed back during the initial application period last year. But just for the sake of recapping you can find my list here.

I also added 2 open tickets during the final application round and I have no idea who to use them on. My only available slots are later in the day and/or into the evening, so basically when everyone is dead tired.

My short list is as follows:

Kikuchi Ayaka
Mutou Tomu
Kinoshita Yukiko
Moriyasu Madoka
Takahashi Juri
Sato Sumire
Miyazaki Miho
Katayama Haruka
Matsui Sakiko

Yup, no clue who to use the tix on. Of course it could be no one from this list, it really depends on availability of members and whether I get really lucky with my timing and can pull off something earlier in the day when everyone is still somewhat awake.

During the early apps I was trying very hard for particular members but Oshima Yuko and Matsui Jurina were pretty elusive for me and unfortunately I got neither. Yuko stings the most since I screwed up with her last year at the handshake event we attended. The closest I’ll get to her now is her statue at Madame Tussauds in Odaiba.

Yup, it sucks.

Looking over the rules from the last 2-shot event from 1830m there seems to be two possible scenarios for positioning for photos. Standing side-by-side or sitting next to your chosen idol. I would believe that sitting would reduce the possibilities of creative poses. I don’t know, I’ll have to see when the first batch of 2-shots start hitting the Interwebs from the early May events.

Of course I haven’t thought of any solid poses. What I would do really depends if I am standing or sitting next to whom I have chosen for my photo ops. I have also discovered there is a kind of a strict no touching rule. Which makes sense. There’s no way AKS will allow one to try to bench press their idols and stuff. But I guess the typical Asian poses like the heart and those that are “fingertips only” seem to be okay.

There are probably exceptions but I really don’t know what they would be and I’m sure that besides management, it would also depend on the member on how far you get away with contact.

With that said I have a few ideas such as recreating classic Hip-Hop album covers.

Or maybe taking inspiration from classic anime series.

Fusion Dance

How about taking a cue from Hollywood movies?

Napoleon Dynamite Pose

Regardless, I’ll figure something out, even if I have to pull out routines from Japanese comedians.

Now if you don’t like the idea of 2-shots (and what’s wrong with you if you do) just because of the fact you have to pay a premium to get one (or because it’s just AKB) please leave your comments to yourself. If aren’t going to attempt to go to this type event then you have no right to run your mouth if you’re not going to experience it yourself.

As for the other 6 days I’m Japan? Well I guess I plan to try to do more touristy type things and hopefully film some of that kind of stuff. Perhaps make a more focused documentary to help some of you out there find stuff to do when you eventually make the trip. If that doesn’t work out I guess more random walking around and buffoonery will be the backup plan.

Whatever it is, I hope to make the most of my short week in the land of the rising sun since it is most likely my only trip there this year.

As always, there will be a live blog and I’ll be tweeting out stuff on the Selective Hearing Twitter account. And maybe I’ll remember to post something on Google+ and Tumblr as well if I remember.
