The 61st title under Morning Musume’s ever-expanding belt of single releases, Utakata Saturday Night! / The Vision / Tokyo to Iu Katasumi is yet another triple A-side release, as well as the last to feature 9th generation member Suzuki Kanon. Featuring three new tracks to enjoy, the single includes a bit of a throwback in one song, as well as your standard Hello! Project fare in the other two.
The first of the three songs featured, Utakata Saturday Night! is a fun throwback to the early 2000’s when Morning Musume were at their peak. Reminiscent of Love Machine, this song is an energetic disco track with some fun imagery, cheap costumes and feathers. It reeks of nostalgia, it sparkles, and hey, hip thrusts! It’s everything you’ve basically missed from Morning Musume since the Platinum era, and as a song, it really does deliver on its vitality. As you would probably guess, this is the track that features Suzuki Kanon the most in her final performance, and it does well in capturing her energetic, joyful image and amazing smile. That said, they truly skimped out on the DJ costume here, though the bow was a nice touch.
Utakata Saturday Night! is quite possibly the best track on the entire single, and definitely the happiest of the lot. It’s quirky and entertaining, and it’s playback ability is high. A winner, if there was any.
The complete opposite of Utakata Saturday Night!, the second track featured, The Vision, is a Toki wo Koe Sora wo Koe meets Tsumetai Kaze to Kataomoi rip off in its sound and, to a degree, its choreography, though it’s still very pretty as a song. Sad to say, the video itself is extremely boring, offering next to nothing in image and proving to be the least appealing of the three videos thanks to its bland backdrop and static feel, despite its nice choreography.
It’s basically the sentimental ballad on the single, however it’s quality lacks thanks to its carbon-copy sound to recent singles and its discount Perfume feel. It does little to impress and, whilst decent, is nothing special, and pretty forgettable if you have something better to listen to on offer.
The third and final track on the single is Tokyo to Iu Katasumi, a song that has proven popular within the fandom, despite its uninspired composition and terribly familiar sound. It’s basically every colorful era song since One・Two・Three, minus the EDM and badly done auto-tune. It even borrows from older choreography, though that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The video is pretty decent thanks to the garage door solo shots, fast paced editing and nice backstage scenes. The only thing that looks out of place happens to be the costumes during the dance shot, but honestly, the pop of colour is welcome here, given how dark and gray this video feels.
The songs okay, but the video’s a lot better, simply because it’s doing something a little different to what is expected, and the song isn’t.
As an entire single, this isn’t necessarily a bad release from Hello! Project, just a pretty standard on. There’s a little something for everyone within the fandom, though Utakata Saturday Night! is the clear gem in this single of rehashed sounds and tired tunes. Hopefully their next one is a little better, if only a little more unique in sound.
