Girls’ Generation’s first sub-unit is called Taetiseo and the group consists of Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun. I’m figuring you can guess where the group’s name comes from so there’s no need to explain that right?
When this group was created SM Entertainment stated, “This subunit will aim to grab the attention of fans with all aspects of music, performance, and fashion styles.”. I have no idea what any of that corporate bullshit means in normal person speak.
What I’m getting from the creation of this group is that SM is giving some members the opportunity to grab a little more spotlight outside of main group. Similar to what YG has done with the side projects of 2NE1 & what Pledis has done with After School and their sub-units.
One would expect the typical cutesy Girls’ Generation pop out of this group but it appears that TTS were taken in a completely different direction. Opting for more of an R&B feel to maximize the abilities of the members involved in this project. After listening to this album I”m left thinking that this is what the material on the Korean version of The Boys should have sounded like.
And while it’s a shame that this will probably only be a temporary shift in sound, there is at least some light shed on what can be done with Girls’ Generation if SM ever wants to think out of the box just a little bit and take the entire group out of the generic & cute idol pop that they can do in their sleep.
Twinkle is a solid start out of the gate for the many supposed sub-units to come out of the Girls’ Generation camp. I do hope they continue to differentiate these projects a little bit from the main group because so far it’s a fairly interesting experiment that could yield something great whenever SM decides to unleash all 9 members on the world again.
