In an effort to catch up on my backlog of music reviews, I will revisit some of the more notable releases that I may have missed in my recaps or wanted to explore in more depth, but could not due to other time-consuming obligations. For this article, it’s Hearts2Hearts’ second single, released back in June.
Review
Following a highly successful debut with The Chase, SM Entertainment’s rookie girl group Hearts2Hearts returned in June with their second single, Style.
Style is unlike the subdued slickness of Hearts2Hearts’ debut, The Chase, and its B-side Butterflies. This song definitely leans more toward cheerful and catchy dance-pop. While it may seem like a complete sonic 180, this feels more like a check to see if this type of concept works for the group.
Based on what I heard, they have no issues navigating through what could be considered a more conventional K-pop girl group-type song. I won’t go as far as to compare and say this song is better than their previous two. This is only Hearts2Hearts’ third song after all.
What I can say is that Style will evoke nostalgic feelings for a simpler time in K-pop for those who remember the early generations of groups in the genre, and it’s a great entry in Hearts2Hearts’ growing discography.
