ILLIT’s first release of 2025 is their first Japanese digital single, Almond Chocolate. The song is part of the soundtrack for the live-action adaptation of the manga It Takes More Than a Pretty Face to Fall in Love.
Almond Chocolate is a song that flew way under my radar. I didn’t know that ILLIT was doing something in Japan until the song appeared in my Apple Music feed.
I have never read the manga or watched the movie whose soundtrack this song is part of, so I can’t say if it matches the content of the source material. However, Almond Chocolate fits well within ILLIT’s dreamy and sweet girl-pop brand.
Sure, this isn’t the most exciting piece of pop music, and Almond Chocolate will appeal most to those who like innocent girl group concepts or want a break from the monotony of dance-oriented pop songs. If you believe that not everything has to be high-energy and clobber you into submission, then this will be for you.
It’s refreshing to hear ILLIT perform something with a serene type of feeling. And while this isn’t a slow jam in the purest sense, this is about as close as you’ll get to one with ILLIT at this point in their careers.
