Review

Eye of the Storm is the ninth studio album from ONE OK ROCK. It features the songs used for Honda’s “Go, Vantage Point” commercial (Change, Stand Out Fit In) and the theme for the movie Kingdom. (Wasted Nights)

Much like their 2017 album Ambitions, Eye of the Storm comes in two flavors. A Japanese version and an international English language version that contain slightly differing track listings.

With Eye of the Storm ONE OK ROCK continue their transition from alternative rock to “Americanized” pop and electronic music. The songs here show a group challenging themselves to try new things by pulling from different musical styles while still sticking to their core spirit.

The title track, Push Back, Worst In Me, and In The Stars combined with the singles are a display of the type of musical landscape ONE OK ROCK are living in now. All of the songs follow the themes of positivity, motivation and inspiration. Sure some of the lyrics might get a little corny but nothing stands out as outlandishly over the top in conveying those messages.

Those looking for the frenetic energy this band is known for may be disappointed by Eye of the Storm. A lot of this album has the group creating songs that evoke an emotional response through dramatic effect rather than beating the listener to a pulp with a sonic hammer. Eye of the Storm is very different musically from Ambitions and XXXV and that may be the deciding factor in whether you give this album a chance.
