Selective Hearing’s Monthly Recap – August 2024

Monthly Recap August Title Card

Content

Over the past few months, there has been nothing to report, mainly because I have been monitoring to see what type of posting schedule works best for my current situation. I have decided to ramp up the original content a little more starting this month (September).

The overall trend of visits to this site is consistent, but more can always be done to increase the number of readers and retain their attention.

IU HEREH TOUR 2024 LOS ANGELES-8

Once again, I ventured out to Los Angeles to see a concert. This time, it was for IU’s HEREH 2024 World Tour. I initially didn’t have tickets to this show since I was one of the many unfortunate who had 20k+ people in front of me in the queue when tickets went on sale.

Thanks to the power of journalism, I successfully applied for a complimentary press ticket to review the concert. Because of that, much of my planning was done at the last minute, but I made it to Los Angeles safe and sound and got to experience the rarity of seeing IU in concert.

The site has two pieces of content related to the IU concert. First is my concert review, and second is our podcast, in which Allen, Ellis and I discuss our experiences at the various tour stops we attended in greater detail.

Music

Remixes

I completed two remix projects in August for different Japanese girl group songs.

The first was for ME:I, the group formed from the most recent Produce 101 Japan survival program. The song I chose to work on is Sugar Bomb. The final result of my work on Sugar Bomb is a dance-pop composition. I intended to put a driving four-to-the-floor beat under the vocal and give the song more of a clubbier edge.

However, things changed as I selected the sound patches and finalized the arrangement. So, instead, my interpretation of Sugar Bomb became less about being a peak-time dance floor filler and more like something one would play at the start of a night out to warm up for the festivities ahead.

The second remix of XG’s Something Ain’t Right. The group’s most recent digital single has a throwback sound reminiscent of 90s – 2000s dance music.

I wanted to stay consistent with the original track’s style for my remix but spice it up a little more. To achieve this, I added layers to the rhythm section, including additional percussion elements, to give the song a more energetic and danceable groove.

The new bass line’s syncopation creates a ‘bouncier feeling’ that matches the energy of the rhythm section, enhancing the track’s overall dance appeal. Lastly, some House music staple instruments, such as the piano, organ, and strings, are included for the melodic elements that even out the instrumental.

Below are my favourites from August 2024.
