IYKYK is XG’s sixth digital single and the pre-release for their upcoming second EP, Awe. The original version is a UK Garage track and contains a sample of m-flo’s 2001 single prism.
The vibe of IYKYK is light and airy, leaning more towards the pop-influenced variant of UK Garage—a change in direction after the harder Hip-Hop of its predecessor, WOKE UP.
Usually, when I think of ideas for remixes of songs, I do my best to avoid replicating too much of the original’s instrumentation. However, since the sample is a prominent part of the song, I had no choice but to find a way to incorporate it into my composition.
But rather than straight-up sampling m-flo’s song, I used similar sound patches to place the same musical ideas into my remix. I also stayed within the UK Garage genre and constructed a slightly more aggressive instrumental, giving IYKYK a different twist.
