Review

Craig David probably fell off most people’s radar sometime after his second album Slicker Than Your Average, ran its course going into the abyss of “Where are they now?” artists shortly after. He certainly couldn’t keep that momentum of his hot start in the late ’90s, yet he’s remained a consistent figure in the UK R&B world despite that.

Following My Intuition is the sixth studio album from Craig David, featuring five single releases. When the Bassline Drops, Nothing Like This, One More Time, No Holding Back, and Ain’t Giving Up.

After six long years, he has returned to making original music. The follow-up to his 2010 cover album Signed Sealed Delivered sees him going back in time and once again fully embracing the UK Garage/R&B hybrid that brought him into the spotlight. If you were a fan of his early collaborations and his album Born To Do It, this should be a welcome return to action.

The best tracks on Following My Intuition happens to be the up-tempo and throwback ones such as Ain’t Giving Up, When The Bassline Drops, 16 (a mash-up of his hit Fill Me In sung over the instrumental of Jack Ü’s Where Are Ü Now), Here With Me and Don’t Go.

Of course, it’s not all dance floor madness. In between those types of songs are mid-tempo R&B jams and ballads. The ones to pay attention to are Change My Love and Better With You. The rest are rather hit or miss regarding quality and cause the album to drag a little.

In the end, this isn’t the perfect comeback album. As I mentioned, it has some R&B filler that has to be trimmed by hitting the skip button. But for those wanting the Craig David from the days of yore back, this is about as close as you will get in the current day.
