RIRI (real name Arai Riri) is a Japanese Pop/R&B singer under Sony Music Japan. She started her career at the age of 4 winning in David Foster’s “Next Generation Star” event in 2011. Her professional career started in 2016 after she signed to AI’s agency MIC-A-HOLIC Inc. and then to Sony Music Japan a year later.
To date she has released 2 full-length albums, 2 mini-albums, 1 live album and 8 singles. Maybe One Day is her 5th digital single. The original version was released in July of 2018 with the subsequent alternate versions following a month later. This song has a sound that has a strong influence from mainstream dance music from the west. So much that it could pass for something you would hear on Top 40 radio rotation in America or Europe.
That may make the song appealing to those who fancy catchy, radio friendly dance pop. This song would also work for those who like some of the uptempo material from artists such as Rita Ora, Bebe Rexha or Ariana Grande.
To be honest there isn’t really a huge difference between the Japanese and English versions of Maybe One Day other than the language RIRI is singing in. She is fully fluent in English so those who are picky about pronunciation when it comes to Japanese singers tackling English lyrics should not have any difficulties understanding what she is saying. Her vocals are equally powerful in either language so there’s no need to worry about one version of the song being inferior to the other when it comes to that aspect.
The KSUKE Remix increases the BPM of the song to a more club friendly level along with a slightly different arrangement and instrumentation. It uses the Japanese vocal rather than the full English one so that may bring some disappointment to listeners who are lacking in Japanese that want to sing along to a clubbier version of the song.
Overall Maybe One Day is a very enjoyable piece of pop music that is a great introduction to RIRI. If you are on the look out for a fresh female singer to add to your J-Pop collection then give this single a go and then check out her back catalog if this entices you.
