Review
tripleS is the world’s first “fan-participating girl group,” they debuted in February 2023 as a 10-member group with the EP Assemble and most recently released Assemble 24, their first album as a complete 24-member group.
I enjoyed their debut EP and most recent album. So why not look at the group’s sub-unit releases? So, in this review, I listen to Glow’s Inner Dance.
Glow is the eighth tripleS subunit, debuting on June 21, 2024. They are similar to NXT, where fans did not vote to select members; Glow was part of a naturally occurring dimension used to promote the final four members of tripleS (S21, S22, S23, S24).
The four members of Glow are:
- Kim Chaewon
- Sullin
- Seoah
- JiYeon
Inner Dance is the debut digital single from tripleS’ latest sub-unit, Glow. When I first heard the song preview on X/Twitter, I was intrigued by the Y2K-style music. Immediate comparisons came to my head with my finger pointing directly at the HYBE girl groups NewJeans and ILLIT. I was expecting something similar for the full release of Inner Dance.
After listening to the song numerous times, I felt its chilled vibe. Even though it’s in the mid-130s tempo range, it doesn’t feel like it. To get an idea of the type of mood I’m getting at, think of songs like Kandi’s Don’t Think I’m Not or the classic Ghost Town DJs track My Boo.
That was unexpected, making Inner Dance appeal to my musical sensibilities more than I thought. Its minimal instrumental allows the member’s voices to add to the track’s ambiance rather than be buried in layers of noise.
Inner Dance was undoubtedly a pleasant surprise, considering the uptempo music that tripleS usually releases. It won’t catch everyone’s attention immediately, but for those willing to give it a few extra spins, it can get stuck in your head.
