Review
tripleS is the world’s first “fan-participating girl group,” and they debuted in February 2023 with the EP Assemble.
Having gone in with low expectations, I found their debut EP enjoyable. So why not look at the group’s sub-unit releases? If they are half as decent as the primary unit, they might be worth trying, right?
So, in this review, I listen to NXT’s Just Do It.
NXT is the sixth tripleS subunit, and they debuted on December 23, 2023. Unlike the other tripleS subunits, there was no fan vote to select members, and NXT was instead used to introduce four more members of tripleS (S17, S18, S19, S20).
The four members of NXT are:
- Park Shion
- Lynn
- Jang Hayeon
- JooBin
I don’t know about many of you, but when I see the letters NXT, I immediately think of the WWE’s third brand—specifically, the black-and-gold era, not the lesser NXT 2.0. So, I chuckled at the name of this tripleS subunit.
The name is fitting, given its purpose of introducing the group’s latest (at the time) members, much like how the wrestling version introduces people to the superstars of the future.
Unlike the other subunits (excluding Acid Eyes, which was more of a mashup project), NXT gets a single song as its introduction to the world. While that may disappoint some, at least MODHAUS gave them a banger to help make their mark.
Just Do It falls well within the funky dance-pop that has become a staple sound for tripleS. It’s a catchy two-and-a-half minutes of ear candy whose only downside is that it’s too short. Another minute or so to feel the groove even more would have been nice.
But that’s OK. Since the song is so catchy, it’s OK to play it twice to make it equal to what a pop song would have been length-wise many moons ago. However, I recommend you put it on endless repeat since it’s such a fun track.
