Review

I DO is the pre-release track for (G)I-DLE’s first English language mini-album HEAT, due for release on September 7, 2023.

It is a synth-pop slow jam with a dreamy and spacey feeling that takes (G)I-DLE into relatively unexplored musical territory.

It’s not unusual for (G)I-DLE to drop a slower song occasionally; however, I don’t believe they have ever done one within the synth-pop genre. It’s a sound that fits them quite nicely, and it would be great if they delve into it further.

They are also not strangers to releasing songs in English, but this would mark their first original English language song as opposed to re-recording one of their Korean releases.

Those with the best English pronunciation handle most of the vocals in this song. So that means you don’t hear much from Shuhua as she gets the least number of lines in the overall distribution.

I usually approach original English language songs from K-Pop groups with dread, especially if it’s something aimed squarely at the market outside of Korea, since many of those types of releases water down the artists and don’t fit the aesthetic that makes them successful in their homeland.

I am happy this is not true with I DO. It’s a song that doesn’t sound out of place in the melting pot of music that is (G)I-DLE’s discography. It also does an excellent job of piquing one’s interest just enough to wonder what the rest of HEAT will sound like.
