Review

NMIXX have returned with the follow-up to their first EP expérgo and unleashed their second (or fourth if you count the digital singles) release of 2023. A Midsummer NMIXX’s Dream is their third single, featuring the pre-release track Roller Coaster and the title track Party O’Clock.

Both songs continue NMIXX’s transition from MIXX POP to a more easily consumable form of music, which will probably persist in upsetting those who still have strong attachments to MIXX POP.

Party O’Clock takes NMIXX into pop-based UK Garage. It’s a bright three minutes of fun perfect for blasting to 11 in your car while you cruise at two miles an hour, holding up traffic behind you.

Roller Coaster keeps the party mood set by the opening track going. It is rooted in House music, which is evident once you hit the chorus and that bass line hits. Compared to Party O’Clock, this has more of a summer-season vibe.

Even though these tracks have a base in club music, they have enough pop elements to make them appealing to those unfamiliar with either style mentioned above. Whether this evolution of NMIXX’s sound is necessary and a good thing will again vary based on how much you think the MIXX POP concept worked.

Given that NMIXX has started to drift further and further away from their original concept into more palatable kinds of music should speak volumes about their future direction. You might disagree with it, but it’s happening, albeit slowly.

I’m incredibly biased regarding both of the songs on this single since they are the style of music I spin when I DJ and what I aspire to compose when I create remixes. So, of course, I can’t recommend these two songs enough.

So if you have like-minded sensibilities, you won’t have any issues with the two songs on this single. But for those who are on the fence about this “new” NMIXX, I recommend giving Roller Coaster a listen over Party O’Clock and see if it titillates your juices.
