Review

IS:SUE kicked off 2026 with their latest single, PHASE. The release features the title track PHASE as its promotional centrepiece, alongside the previously released digital single Super Luna. It also marks the group’s final release as a three-member unit, ahead of RIN’s return from hiatus.

Up to this point, IS:SUE have navigated a range of musical styles, from high-tempo dance-pop to more vocal-focused pop ballads. Their single structure remains consistent, with higher-energy tracks placed up front before transitioning into less intense mid-tempo R&B/pop hybrids. For long-time listeners, this sequencing will feel very familiar.

Given that the single is only four songs and runs just 12 minutes, there isn’t much room for a deeper dive.

Of the two opening tracks, I gravitate toward Super Luna and its more conventional structure. I like the straightforward, synth-pop-influenced groove and the big chorus. I’m not a big fan of PHASE’s mishmash style. It has its moments, but it’s not for me. I can see those who enjoy mix-pop production liking it a lot.

The two closing tracks are more in line with my personal tastes, and IS:SUE do a great job with these mellow R&B and hip-hop songs compared to their more experimental, higher-tempo material. Of this pair, I preferred Any Minute. It has the right amount of chill groove to keep your attention without overstaying its welcome. I don’t know if this is a popular opinion, but I wouldn’t mind if IS:SUE leaned more toward R&B/pop crossovers in future releases. That style of music seems to fit them more naturally.

As a compact release, PHASE serves as a snapshot of where IS:SUE currently stand. It’s a quick listen that maintains their presence while hinting at directions they could explore next.
