Review

Jo Yuri’s follow-up to her 2021 single GLASSY arrived on June 2nd with her first mini-album titled Op.11 Y-Waltz: in Major and its lead single Love Shhh!

Unlike her previous single, GLASSY, Love Shhh! has a pop-rock edge similar to the music her fellow IZ*ONE member Yena released for her solo debut, Smiley. There’s an overwhelmingly joyous feeling to Love Shhh! that sucks you in once the song gets going. To paraphrase the lyrics, you will feel “good as hell” while listening to it.

The follow-up song Rolla Skates takes Yuri into Urban Pop territory and continues the theme of love set by Love Shhh! just at a more leisurely pace. I don’t recall IZ*ONE going full R&B-Pop on any of their songs, so it’s rather refreshing to hear Yuri try this particular genre out. I wouldn’t mind her doing more of this style of music.

The remainder of the album has a pair of lovely ballads that gives Yuri free reign to show off her vocal capabilities. Of these two songs, I like Opening the most. It has a gentle and relaxing feel and is an excellent ending track.

After GLASSY, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Jo Yuri. However, with Op.22 Y-Waltz: in Major, it sounds like she’s slowly figuring out her groove, and I look forward to what she comes out with next.
