Review

After spending their post Ring Ring promotional time posting videos on Tik Tok, Instagram, and Youtube, Rocket Punch has finally returned with a brand new EP called Yellow Punch.

The lead single, Chiquita, picks up on the newtro vibe that Ring Ring had. However, Chiquita has more of an 80s dance club feel. Nevertheless, it is an enjoyable homage to that period of music without going too overboard on the cheese that music from that era indulged in.

This type of sound, while not entirely new to K-Pop girl groups, works well for Rocket Punch. The follow-up song In My World further emphasizes this fact by increasing the energy in a joyous musical explosion.

Outside of the two opening songs, the others worth mentioning are Red Balloon and LOUDER. Red Balloon takes Rocket Punch back into contemporary pop. This funky number is so damn catchy and is the best b-side/album cut they have done, in my opinion.

On the other hand, LOUDER has Rocket Punch channelling their inner ITZY. Well, that’s what the song sounds like to me, ITZY, but less bombastic. It’s a nice change of pace from the group. They haven’t made a lot of aggressive dance tracks since Bouncy, so it’s great to see them go back to that.

YELLOW PUNCH is another fine release from Rocket Punch. They are incredibly consistent with their music except for the odd hiccup like Juicy. Even then, they never fail to release some fun albums.

There are many Kool-Aid flavours for them to name their albums after, so hopefully, there will be more to come from Rocket Punch in 2022.
