Review

STEREOTYPE is the follow-up to STAYC’s highly successful STAYDOM single featuring the title track as its lead single.

ASAP is one of the catchiest songs of 2021 and is a challenge to follow up. However, STAYC manages to take that challenge head-on and recapture some of the fire of that song with STEREOTYPE. To me, it has a similar musical vibe to Don’t Think I’m Not, My Boo or Swing My Way.

Lyrically, STEREOTYPE is pretty tame compared to those songs as STAYC are still innocent young women. (The songs they choose to do covers of indicating otherwise) But it’s simple to follow, given that the song’s title pretty much sums up what the girls are talking about.

When it comes to the b-sides, the slower songs I’LL BE THERE and COMPLEX leave the biggest impression. These are similar in tone and theme to LOVE FOOL from STAYDOM. These types of songs continue to reveal different layers of the group beyond their happy-go-lucky a-sides.

STEREOTYPE doesn’t stray too far from what STAYC has been releasing so far, and it feels like a slow burn is being followed for them. Not that there’s anything wrong with that at this point in their career. With what they have offered so far there’s a lot to look forward to whenever STAYC make their next comeback.
