Review

Early into the new year of 2024, IVE announced their first English language digital single, All Night, featuring American rapper and singer Saweetie.

For some K-pop fans, the idea of a group releasing a song for English speakers is something to look forward to. For others, it is something to approach with trepidation because these releases have the potential to be less than stellar.

So, what do we get with IVE’s first foray into performing something in English? Well, it’s not a brand-new original song, that’s for sure. Instead, they perform a cover/reinterpretation of Icona Pop’s 2013 hit All Night. Is it disappointing that Starship and IVE went with the safe choice of selecting a song that most pop listeners would know? Maybe a little.

How does IVE do with this song? Their version also has traces of the pop club sound of 11 years ago, so check that off for staying faithful to the original version. The vocals are also performed in a choral style, which will make those hoping for each member of IVE to get some solo lines, sad pandas.

Saweetie, however, gets her time to shine. It makes sense to feature her more because she is probably the more well-known artist to casuals not embedded deep in the K-pop world. Strangely, the two rappers in IVE do not have some verbal interchange with her. It’s a lost opportunity, in my opinion.

There isn’t much else to say about this song. It’s okay and isn’t as memorable as IVE’s Korean songs. But at least it’s not some abomination of an original English language song that would have sucked all the charm of IVE out into the ether. So, let’s be thankful for that.
