In the year leading up to Umaretekara Hajimete, Mita Yume Nogizaka46 has continued to grow. They have advanced past the departures of first-generation members Fukugawa Mai and Hashimoto Nanami and also added a third generation of members. They have even spawned their first sister group in the form of Keyakizaka46.
The culmination of all that activity is the release of this album. With their third effort, Nogizaka46 has solidified its position as a “rival group” to the 48 family. And the term may mean something now that they have firmly established their footing. Whether you agree with that statement will depend on your view of the 46 groups as a whole compared to their 48 cousins and other idol groups.
Moving on. With a rather short 3 single cycle preceding this album, there are more new songs for fans. This makes Umaretekara Hajimete Mita Yume very similar to Sorezore no Isu in structure, with many newer songs appearing at the end of each album version.
On first listen, most of the newer material follows the standard 46-song template giving the impression that there isn’t anything too exciting to grab onto. Upon repeated listens, some songs stand out, such as the saccharine Gomen ne, Smoothie, Minikui Watashi and the ballad Katai Kara no You ni Dakishimeta.
The real attention grabbers are the songs that take Nogizaka46 somewhat outside their comfort zone. The light EDM/dance pop nuances of Rewind Ano Hi and Mangetsu ga Kieta combined with the 70’s retro feel of Ryuusei Discotech add some sonic variety to a standard set of Nogizaka46 songs.
Despite having a few tracks that take the group a bit off the reservation, Umaretekara Hajimete Mita Yume is pretty much what you can expect from Nogizaka46. Whether that entices you to pick this up is up to you.
