SummerSlam is considered one of WWE’s Big Four out of main PLE’s. This will be the first time in the PLE’s history that it will be a two night event. Team Selective Hearing goes through their thoughts and predictions on what will happen in the summer’s hottest event.
SummerSlam Night 1
WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship Match
Raquel Rodriguez & Roxanne Perez (c) vs Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss
Allen: Not too sure about match order, so I just made a few guesses. They updated Roxanne Perez’s theme song and it’s a total downgrade. WWE really likes the “unlikely partners” trope as well. The pairing of Alexa Bliss and Charlotte has been super surprising to me, Charlotte has been getting crazy positive cheers. I haven’t heard those in so long. The pairing is working very well on TV too. I’m thinking they will both score the gold, it’s been a while.
Greg: So Charlotte and Bliss are an odd couple eh? It seems to be getting over, and people authentically cheering for Charlotte is hella weird. With that said, Charlotte can never be too long without gold around her waist so I expect the odd couple to beat the Judgement Day ladies.
BigFreaky: As Greg said, Charlotte can never be too long without gold around her waist, so that is what I expect to happen in this match. Judgement Day’s stock will plummet due to that. Liv will not be happy losing the belts, and never being in the match.
Justin: I think if it was against a different pair of veterans, I would’ve chosen the young bloods. But WWE are not going to waste this opportunity to put gold on Charlotte WHILE she’s getting cheered. Plus I love Alexa Bliss.
Tag Team Match
Randy Orton & Jelly Roll vs Drew McIntyre & Logan Paul
Allen: I kind of hope this goes on early so we can get it out the way. If you go back to last year, Jelly Roll opened the show. I don’t typically listen to his music, but the man has lost a ton of weight and looks good. I’m sure he will be better than a certain Wrestlemania ruining rapper. I hope this is more of a showcase of him whooping up on Logan Paul while Orton and McIntyre have a pretty easy night filling in some spots. Winners. Randy Orton and Jelly Roll.
Greg: This match gets no fucks from me and will probably be my dinner or bathroom break. I give some credit to Jelly Roll for looking like he’s trying to embed himself into the Fed properly. He cut a pretty decent promo on Logan Paul and he seems to have learned some big man style moves. The winners of this match are very predictable. The question is who on the heel team eats the pin from Jelly Roll.
BigFreaky: Per usual I hope LP breaks his neck somehow. Unfortunately he will be on the winning team.
Justin: I think Randy and Jelly take this one. First of all, Jelly Roll getting himself in better shape is a great story in itself. The guy is actually fantastic on the microphone. And if the Travis Scott fallout reports are true, WWE are definitely petty enough to show him what he missed out on.
WWE Women’s Champion Title Match
Tiffany Stratton (c) vs Jade Gargill
Allen: Probably the match I have the least amount of interest in seeing. Tiffany Stratton, I feel, hasn’t done much being the champ ever since she won the title. The Raw Women’s Division has been where most of the magic is and that’s taken the wind out of her sails. I love Jade Cargill even going back to her AEW days. However, now that she doesn’t have Naomi to bounce off of in the storyline, I think she will have to be in a more interesting situation than just being Queen of the Ring. It’ll still be Tiffy Time for a few more months, Tiffany Stratton wins.
Greg: Whenever Jade is on the screen I am scaroused. Then she starts wrestling and the scarousal goes away pretty fast. Tiffy’s run as champ on the blue brand hasn’t been the greatest but at least she can go in the ring with whoever she’s paired with. This probably won’t be a technical masterpiece and might end up being ok. But Jade is leaving empty handed.
BigFreaky: Tiffy can’t beat Charlotte at Mania and then lose to Jade a few months later?? Right? Right??
Justin: Going with Tiffany Stratton for the win. Quite simple – I don’t think it’s time for her to lose the belt. I don’t think it’s Jade’s time to win it yet.
Tag Team Match
Roman Reigns & Jey Uso vs Bron Breakker & Bronson Reed
Allen: Jey and Roman’s entrances will be longer than most of the previous matches. Should be a heavy hitting showcase. I imagine Bron and Bron getting some good power spots but nothing too fancy. Jey Uso and Roman Reigns with the win.
Greg: As Allen said, most of the time for this match will be dedicated to Jey and Roman’s entrances. I say about 25 minutes combined for their entrances alone. That may not leave a lot of time for an actual match with the next generation of Paul Heyman guys. So depending on how much time is left, this could be three big meaty men slapping meat and Jey Uso. I’m going against the grain and say the heels get the win.
BigFreaky: On paper, how could you not go with Roman and Jey?… well you got the Big Meat Mafia to contend with. After Raw this week, and BMM completely destroying The Bloodline… I gotta hope for the babyface comeback.
Justin: This is a tough one. With Seth (supposedly) being out, what is their mindset with Breakker and Reed? Keep them steady and strong? Can you keep that interesting until Seth gets back? Beat them and get them off TV for a while to retool things? Since their immediate future is easier to handle and plan, I think Jey and Roman win this.
Singles Match
Sami Zayn vs Karrion Kross
Allen: I remember people saying that this was going to be a Wrestlemania match. This will be more of the cooldown match no matter where it’s placed on the card. I do like that Karrion Kross is finally getting screen time after working hard for it off camera. I like that he’s the devil on the shoulder and messing with people. Hopefully he and Scarlett have found their niche and get new contracts. Winner is Karrion Kross.
Greg: Sami wins, Kross & Scarlett remain in contract limbo.
BigFreaky: Sami DQ’s himself. KK winner.
Justin: With Karrion catching a bit of fire despite what he’s been given, I hope WWE sees this through. I’m rooting for his ascent so Karrion Kross for the win. The little things he does when he does get TV time backstage or even during a match are always interesting to see and speculate.
World Heavyweight Championship Match
Gunther (c) vs CM Punk
Allen: Now this is where most of my interest for night one will go. Depending on how legit you think Seth Rollins’ injury might be, this match can be very interesting. Some have believed that his injury has been a work and that there may be a cash in after the match. If this goes more of a legit match, then I don’t see Gunther losing, maybe with Bron and Bron interfering in the end. The winner is Gunther.
Greg: My heart says keep the belt on Gunther. His last run at the top was great and this current run could be just as good. But I can see Punk getting the win if Seth’s injury is indeed a work. I’m gonna go with my heart in this one.
BigFreaky: The winners will be us. We will get a wrestling clinic. Gunther just made Goldberg go beddy-by. Maybe it’s time for CM Punk to make Gunther sleep? How soon do we start the road to Wrestlemania? Is Survivor Series 2 nights yet? I’ll keep my comrade’s pick as well. Gunther retains.
Justin: Seth Rollins (alleged) injury also makes this a tough one. I can definitely see CM Punk winning this and launching off a new season toward the next Mania. But Gunther just got it back. He just retired Goldberg. The complaint was that his last run was not as dominating as it should’ve been. So with all that in mind. Gunther should win this one and get the title run he deserves. MY KING.
